Few film scores reset the taste of an entire decade the way this one did. In 1977 John Williams chose a late-romantic symphonic idiom at a moment when Hollywood was working mainly with pop songs and electronics, and recorded the score with the London Symphony Orchestra at Anvil Studios in Denham. Main Title, Princess Leia's Theme, and Cantina Band grew into concert pieces in their own right. The album originally appeared on 20th Century Records, won an Academy Award for Best Original Score and three Grammys, and in 2005 the American Film Institute placed the score at number one on its list of the greatest film scores.
