Ladies of the Canyon, originally released in 1970 on Reprise Records, catches Joni Mitchell moving from folk towards a richer, more piano-driven sound. The title refers to Laurel Canyon, the artists' enclave above Los Angeles where she was living at the time. It holds several of her best-known songs — 'Big Yellow Taxi', 'Woodstock' and 'The Circle Game' — pairing intimate character sketches with wider themes of nature, transience and the late-sixties counterculture.
