The System Has Failed, originally from 2004, started out as a Dave Mustaine solo album and was released under the Megadeth name for contractual reasons. Mustaine had just recovered from nerve damage in his arm that nearly ended his playing, and brought back Chris Poland for the sessions, the lead guitarist on Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good! and Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?. The rest was played by session musicians Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Jimmie Lee Sloas on bass; it is the first Megadeth album without co-founder David Ellefson. Musically the focus is back on thrash with fully written lead parts, heard on the single "Die Dead Enough" and on the opener "Blackmail the Universe".
