Bury Me at Makeout Creek is Mitski's third album and the first she wrote on guitar, after two piano and orchestral records that came out of her studies at SUNY Purchase. It was originally released in November 2014 on Double Double Whammy, recorded in houses and makeshift studios with a small group of musicians and friends. You can hear that: overdriven guitars, bare drums, and a voice that can move from a whisper to a shout within a single line. The singles First Love / Late Spring and Townie came out ahead of it. This was the record that broke Mitski through with the music press.
