Theatre of Pain, originally released in 1985, is Mötley Crüe's third studio album and came out of a chaotic stretch. Recording started that January, while singer Vince Neil was still facing court over the car crash that killed Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley. Producer Tom Werman took the edge off the Shout at the Devil sound and moved the band towards glam metal, with more melody and a smoother mix. The power ballad "Home Sweet Home" became an MTV staple, and the version of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boys Room" gave Mötley Crüe their first US Top 40 single. Heavier tracks such as "Louder Than Hell" and "Use It or Lose It" keep the line-up of Neil, Mick Mars, Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee closer to their earlier sound.
