Tonight's the Night came out of two deaths close to Neil Young: Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry, both from an overdose. Young recorded the album in 1973 with The Santa Monica Flyers, featuring Ben Keith, Nils Lofgren, Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina, in late-night sessions where nothing was smoothed over: off notes and cracked vocals were left in. Reprise Records then held the tapes back for two years, so the album was originally released only in June 1975, after On the Beach. The title track, Tired Eyes, Albuquerque and Mellow My Mind rank among the bleakest and most direct work in his catalogue.
