On their second studio album the four members of New Order took over production themselves, and the difference with the debut is immediately audible: sequencers, drum machines and synthesisers sit alongside the guitars, and Bernard Sumner's vocals step forward. 'Age of Consent', 'The Village' and '5 8 6' move towards the dancefloor, while 'Your Silent Face' and 'Leave Me Alone' hold on to the melancholy of the early days. The album originally appeared in 1983 on Factory Records and reached number four on the UK albums chart; 'Blue Monday', released as a standalone 12-inch in the same months, was deliberately left off. Peter Saville's sleeve, with a flower still life by Henri Fantin-Latour and a colour code along the edge, became as well known as the music. Rolling Stone later included the album in its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This edition is an LP.
