With Nevermind, the grunge of Seattle broke through to a mass audience in one stroke. Nirvana recorded the album with producer Butch Vig at Sound City Studios in California, hiding bright pop melodies behind Kurt Cobain's abrasive guitars. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' grew into the band's signature song, followed by singles such as 'Come As You Are', 'Lithium' and 'In Bloom'. The album first appeared in 1991 on DGC and, early in 1992, knocked Michael Jackson's Dangerous off the top of the Billboard 200.
