Vitalogy originally came out in November 1994, first on vinyl only for two weeks and only afterwards on CD. Pearl Jam's third album took shape during the touring for Vs., in a period of conflict with Ticketmaster and of tension inside the band; drummer Dave Abbruzzese left before the album was released. The songs pull in every direction: the punk-leaning 'Spin the Black Circle' and 'Whipping' sit beside the ballads 'Nothingman' and 'Immortality', with experiments such as 'Bugs' and 'Stupidmop' in between. 'Better Man' was never issued as a single, yet spent eight weeks at number one on the US Album Rock Tracks chart. Rolling Stone reviewer Al Weisel called it at the time 'a wildly uneven and difficult record, sometimes maddening, sometimes ridiculous, often powerful'.
