The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale gathers ten recordings Prince had sitting in his archive from between 1985 and 1994. Warner Bros. originally issued it in August 1999; it was the last album he owed the label under his contract, and he never spoke of it as anything other than a contractual obligation. The tone is calmer than the work he was putting out himself in those years: jazzy ballads such as 'The Rest Of My Life' and 'Extraordinary' alongside the funk of 'It's About That Walk'. Because the tracks come from different sessions, it plays more like a cross-section of a decade in the studio than a composed album.
