Flash Gordon is the soundtrack Queen wrote for the science-fiction film by director Mike Hodges, and at the same time their ninth studio album; it originally came out in 1980. Largely instrumental, built on synthesizers and Brian May's guitar, the music links short film cues into a continuous whole. Only Flash's Theme — issued as a single simply as Flash — and the closing The Hero carry full vocals. The score later gained a cult status of its own, apart from the film, and was sampled by artists including Public Enemy.
