Queen is the band's debut album, originally released in 1973. It was recorded at night in Trident Studios, in the free hours between paying sessions, with Roy Thomas Baker and John Anthony producing. The album stays close to the band's hard-rock and prog roots, with Brian May's multi-tracked guitar harmonies and Freddie Mercury's soaring vocals on Keep Yourself Alive, Liar, Great King Rat and the closing Seven Seas Of Rhye. Opening single Keep Yourself Alive failed to chart, but Rolling Stone critic Gordon Fletcher called it "a truly awesome move for the jugular" at the time.
