Strings, choir, and a guitar sound heavier than anything before it: on Mutter, Rammstein pushed towards the border between metal and film music. The third studio album, originally released in 2001, was recorded in the south of France and produced four singles, Sonne, Links 2 3 4, Ich will, and Feuer frei!, all of which became live staples. Against those sit the slow-building title track and the closing Nebel, where the band strips the bombast away.
