For their second studio album Red Hot Chili Peppers brought in George Clinton of Parliament-Funkadelic as producer, and it shows throughout: Freaky Styley runs on tight funk bass, horn parts from the P-Funk Horny Horns and Clinton's own baroque vocal arrangements. It was the first studio album with Hillel Slovak, who had returned on guitar earlier that year, and the last with drummer Cliff Martinez. The music moves between funk, punk and psychedelia; the lyrics deal with the band members' lives in Hollywood. Jungle Man and Hollywood (Africa) appeared as promotional singles, and videos were made for Catholic School Girls Rule and Jungle Man. The album was originally released on 16 August 1985 via EMI America Records.
