Show No Mercy, Slayer's debut album, originally appeared in December 1983 through Metal Blade. The band paid for the sessions themselves, with money from Tom Araya's work as a respiratory therapist and a loan from Kerry King's father. The sound still leaned on the speed and satanic imagery of the new wave of British heavy metal, but Evil Has No Boundaries, Die by the Sword, and Black Magic already ran considerably faster than what most of their contemporaries played. It became the best-selling title in the Metal Blade catalogue up to that point and laid the foundation for the thrash metal Slayer went on to sharpen.
