Ceremony followed the commercial peak of Sonic Temple and became the first Cult album without bassist Jamie Stewart. Astbury and Duffy originally recorded it in 1991 with session musicians and went for a rawer, less polished sound than its predecessor. "Wild Hearted Son" and "Heart of Soul" were released as singles; the lyrics and imagery draw on Astbury's interest in Indigenous North American culture. In the United States the album reached number 25 on the Billboard album chart.
