The Cult

The Cult began in 1983, when singer Ian Astbury teamed up with guitarist Billy Duffy as Death Cult after Southern Death Cult fell apart. A year later the name was shortened to The Cult. The band moved from the post-punk and gothic rock of Dreamtime and Love, with "She Sells Sanctuary", to the stripped-back hard rock of Electric, produced by Rick Rubin in New York. Sonic Temple brought their biggest commercial success in 1989, with "Fire Woman" and "Edie (Ciao Baby)". After a split in the mid-nineties Astbury and Duffy returned with Beyond Good and Evil, and kept making albums up to Under the Midnight Sun in 2022.
