Pornography, originally released in 1982, closes the run of dark albums The Cure began with Seventeen Seconds and Faith. The opening line 'It doesn't matter if we all die' sets the tone for eight songs of pounding drums, smeared guitars and an airless, compressed production by Phil Thornalley and the band themselves. The record took shape during a period of heavy drinking and mounting arguments; shortly after the accompanying tour the group all but fell apart. 'The Hanging Garden' was the only single, and the album reached number 8 on the UK chart.
