Songs of a Lost World appeared on 1 November 2024 on Fiction Records and was The Cure's first studio album in sixteen years. Robert Smith wrote and produced the eight songs himself, during a period in which he lost his parents and his brother; loss, ageing and farewell run through the lyrics. The pacing is slow and drawn out - 'Alone' opens with more than three minutes of instrumental build, the closing 'Endsong' runs to almost eleven - with layers of guitar, piano and synthesizer over the rhythm section of Simon Gallup and Jason Cooper. The album entered the UK chart at number 1, the band's first number 1 since Wish in 1992.
