The Smiths is the self-titled debut album by the Manchester band centered on Morrissey and Johnny Marr, originally issued in 1984 on Rough Trade. The album was produced by John Porter and helped shape British indie music of the 1980s. What Difference Does It Make?, Hand in Glove, Still Ill and Reel Around the Fountain are among its defining tracks. Thematically the lyrics deal with loneliness, longing and post-war Northern England. The album reached number 2 in the United Kingdom.
