On Trench, Twenty One Pilots wrapped their music around a story of their own for the first time: the walled city of Dema, the nine bishops who rule it, and the Banditos who escape it, a world that fans had been decoding for months before release through hidden websites and letters. The fifth studio album appeared on 5 October 2018 through Fueled by Ramen and was produced by Tyler Joseph together with Paul Meany of Mutemath, largely in Joseph's home studio in Columbus. 'Jumpsuit' and 'Nico and the Niners' opened the campaign, followed by 'Levitate', 'My Blood', 'Chlorine', and 'The Hype'. The sound is darker and more rock-leaning than Blurryface, with the heavy bassline of 'Jumpsuit' at one end and the subdued 'Neon Gravestones' and 'Leave the City' at the other. The accompanying Bandito Tour ran from October 2018 to December 2019.
