Van Morrison recorded Astral Weeks in the autumn of 1968 at Century Sound Studios in New York, with jazz players who largely filled in the songs by feel: Richard Davis on double bass, Connie Kay on drums, and Jay Berliner on acoustic guitar. Originally released in November 1968 through Warner Bros., the album runs as a continuous set of eight pieces in which folk, blues, jazz, and strings flow into one another, a long way from the pop single Brown Eyed Girl of a year earlier. It sold badly on release and got almost no promotion from the label; its reputation only built up in the years that followed. Cyprus Avenue, Madame George, and Sweet Thing are among his best known songs. This edition is an LP.
