In 1972 zag The Beach Boys er anders uit dan in de surfjaren: Brian Wilson trad nauwelijks nog op de voorgrond en de Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikanten Blondie Chaplin en Ricky Fataar waren bij de band gekomen. Sail On Sailor 1972 zet de twee albums uit dat jaar naast elkaar, Carl and the Passions - So Tough en het in Nederland opgenomen Holland, met daarbij de vertelplaat Mount Vernon and Fairway. Rond die albums staan sessieopnames, alternatieve mixen, onuitgebrachte nummers als Carry Me Home en Hard Time, en een volledig concert uit Carnegie Hall van november 1972. De uitgave verscheen in december 2022 via Capitol/UMe.
Deze uitgave is de vinylbox met vijf lp's op 180 gram, de 7-inch ep Mount Vernon and Fairway en een boek van 48 pagina's.
