200 Motels was Frank Zappa's poging het leven op tournee te vangen in wat hij zelf een 'surrealistische documentaire' noemde. De film uit 1971, die hij schreef en samen met Tony Palmer regisseerde, zette The Mothers naast het Royal Philharmonic Orchestra en gaf rollen aan Ringo Starr, Keith Moon en Theodore Bikel. De soundtrack schakelt navenant tussen orkestpartijen, koorstukken, rock en gesproken scènes, met 'Lonesome Cowboy Burt', 'Magic Fingers' en de finale 'Strictly Genteel' als bekendste stukken. Het was een van de eerste keren dat Zappa zijn rockband en een symfonieorkest in één werk samenbracht. De soundtrack verscheen oorspronkelijk in 1971 via United Artists Records. Deze uitgave is een boxset met zes cd's, met naast het geremasterde album ook demo's, outtakes en dialoogbanden uit het archief.
