My Name is Bear is Nahko’s debut solo album, which revisits unreleased songs from his past that detail his transition into adulthood, with excerpts of old tape recordings from that era interspersed. Most of the songs were written when he was 18-21, with a few exceptions being written in the following years that he thought fit the theme of the album.
Though this is a solo album, Nahko is still joined by his band, Medicine for the People, who performed on the album and supporting tour.
He has referred to this album as a prequel, and stated that it acts as a “volume 1,” adding that there’s another collection of old songs waiting to be dug up and recorded.
