The Hissing of Summer Lawns, originally released in 1975 on Asylum Records, is where Joni Mitchell broke her song forms open towards jazz and world music. On 'The Jungle Line' she used recordings of the Drummers of Burundi, years before sampling became common. The lyrics sketch the unease behind affluent American suburbia, with alienation and women's lives as recurring themes. Puzzling to critics at first, the album was later recognised as strikingly forward-looking.
