This album was originally released in 1969 as David Bowie's second studio album and was later reissued under the title Space Oddity, after its opening song. That title track — released around the Apollo 11 moon landing — became Bowie's first major hit and introduced the character Major Tom. The rest of the album moves between folk, psychedelia and singer-songwriter styles, with longer pieces such as "Cygnet Committee" and "Memory of a Free Festival".
