Diamond Dogs, originally released in 1974, was David Bowie's eighth studio album and drew the curtain on his Ziggy Stardust era. After George Orwell's estate refused him the rights to stage a musical of Nineteen Eighty-Four, Bowie folded fragments of that project into his own vision of a post-apocalyptic city overrun by street gangs. For the first time he handled most of the guitar work himself, giving the record a raw, almost unsteady edge. "Rebel Rebel" became its best-known single, alongside the title track and the "Sweet Thing / Candidate / Sweet Thing (Reprise)" suite. The album entered the UK chart at number one.
