For The Slim Shady LP, originally released in 1999, Dr. Dre brought an unknown rapper from Detroit out to Los Angeles, and the result shifted the balance of hip-hop. Eminem writes almost everything here through his alter ego Slim Shady, a figure he had invented on the 1997 Slim Shady EP and who let him mix cartoonish violence, self-mockery and poverty. 'My Name Is' became the breakthrough single, 'Guilty Conscience' cast him and Dr. Dre as devil and angel, and 'Rock Bottom' shows how close the material sat to his own circumstances. Alongside Dr. Dre, the Bass Brothers and Eminem himself worked on the production. The album won the Grammy for Best Rap Album.
