John Lennon

John Lennon became famous worldwide as the singer, guitarist and songwriter of The Beatles, and then started a solo career that sounded far rawer than the band's work. On John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970) he turned his childhood and his primal scream therapy into short, stripped-back songs, and Imagine (1971) gave him his best-known song in its title track. Political records with Yoko Ono followed, then the New York years around Mind Games (1973) and Walls and Bridges (1974), a five-year break, and the return with Double Fantasy (1980). Lennon was shot dead in New York on 8 December 1980, shortly after that album appeared. His catalogue has since been looked after by his family, who keep releasing the work in new mixes and box sets.
