On his second album Bruce Springsteen pushed the street poetry of his debut into longer, looser pieces with a strong soul and jazz streak. "Kitty's Back" and "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" stretch well past seven minutes, carried by organ, saxophone and accordion from the musicians who would soon form the E Street Band, and "New York City Serenade" closes with almost ten minutes of piano and strings. The stories play out on the boardwalk of Asbury Park and in the side streets of New York. The album originally appeared in 1973 and sold poorly at the time, but "Rosalita" went on to close Springsteen's concerts for years.
