Lotus captures Santana on 3 and 4 July 1973 in Osaka, during the tour around Caravanserai. The live album was originally released in 1974 as a triple LP, in Japan only, via CBS/Sony; Europe did not get the complete set until a year later. The band of that moment, with singer Leon Thomas, Tom Coster and Richard Kermode on keyboards and Michael Shrieve on drums, takes all the room it needs for long pieces where Latin, rock and jazz fusion meet. Alongside Black Magic Woman, Gypsy Queen, Oye Como Va and Samba Pa Ti sits the seventeen-minute Incident at Neshabur. The sleeve by Japanese designer Tadanori Yokoo has 22 panels and is listed by Guinness World Records as the gatefold with the most facings.
This edition is a 3-LP.
