Metallica

Metallica came out of Los Angeles and pushed thrash metal into the mainstream. From the raw Kill 'Em All (1983) the music grew more intricate on Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, until the untitled 1991 ‘Black Album’ reached millions of listeners with Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters. What followed was the bluesy hard rock of Load and ReLoad, the orchestral S&M with the San Francisco Symphony, the stripped-down St. Anger and a return to thrash on Death Magnetic, Hardwired... To Self-Destruct and 72 Seasons. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich have been at the core since 1981; Kirk Hammett joined in 1983 and Robert Trujillo in 2003, while bassist Cliff Burton played with the band until his death in 1986.
