Ride the Lightning originally appeared in 1984 as Metallica's second studio album. The band stretched its thrash metal with longer, more elaborate structures, acoustic intros and the instrumental closer The Call of Ktulu; bassist Cliff Burton left an audible mark on the arrangements. Fade to Black became the group's first real ballad, while For Whom the Bell Tolls and Creeping Death turned into live staples. It was also the last album to carry writing credits for Dave Mustaine, who had left two years earlier.
