Morrissey

Morrissey grew up in Manchester and made his name in the 1980s as the singer and lyricist of The Smiths. When that band broke up in 1987 he moved almost straight into a solo career that has now lasted far longer. His debut Viva Hate entered the UK album chart at number 1 in March 1988, with Stephen Street producing and co-writing and Vini Reilly of The Durutti Column on guitar. Through the 1990s the sound grew harder and leaned on rockabilly and glam rock: Your Arsenal (1992), produced by former David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson, earned a Grammy nomination, and Vauxhall and I (1994) took him back to number 1 in Britain. After a quiet stretch came You Are the Quarry (2004), Low in High School (2017), and in 2026 Make-Up Is A Lie, his first album in six years. What runs through all of it is the baritone, the contrary writing about longing, class, and England, and a settled band around guitarist Boz Boorer.
