After Wings ended, Paul McCartney shut himself away in his own studio in 1979 with a handful of synthesisers, a drum machine and tape tricks. What he recorded there on his own became McCartney II. "Coming Up" turned into a hit; "Temporary Secretary", with its stuttering sequencer, was picked up decades later by DJs and producers. Around them sit "Waterfalls", quiet piano songs and a few genuinely odd instrumentals. The album first appeared in May 1980, ten years after McCartney, and forms the middle part of his self-played trilogy.
