Binaural originally appeared in May 2000 and was the first Pearl Jam album with drummer Matt Cameron, who came over from Soundgarden and stayed with the band afterwards. For the first time since Ten the group worked not with Brendan O'Brien but with producer Tchad Blake, known for his binaural recording technique: two microphones that mimic human hearing, and the source of the album's title. The mood is darker and murkier than on earlier work, with 'Nothing as It Seems' and 'Light Years' as singles and lyrics about alienation and doubt. The sleeve shows the Hourglass Nebula, photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope. During the tour that followed the band began releasing every concert as an official bootleg; 72 shows appeared as individual double CDs.
