On By the Way, Red Hot Chili Peppers moved further towards melody. John Frusciante wrote most of the vocal melodies, backing harmonies and guitar parts, giving the eighth studio album from 2002 a restrained, almost doo-wop flavoured sound; the funk survived in isolated moments such as 'Can't Stop' and 'Throw Away Your Television'. Besides the title track, the album produced 'The Zephyr Song', 'Universally Speaking' and 'Dosed'. By the Way entered the Billboard 200 at number two. This edition is a 2-LP on black vinyl.
