Face to Face, from 1966, was the first Kinks album with every song written by Ray Davies. He used the song here as a small portrait: Party Line, Dandy, Session Man and House in the Country each sketch a type or a situation, often mocking English class distinctions. Musically the band moved away from the raw R&B of the first records towards harpsichord, sound effects and Eastern-tinged guitar lines. Sunny Afternoon, the languid song about a broke aristocrat, topped the British chart in the summer of 1966. This edition is an LP.
