Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers came together in Gainesville, Florida in 1976, where Tom Petty, guitarist Mike Campbell, and keyboard player Benmont Tench already knew each other from their earlier band Mudcrutch. The debut album caught on in England first, after which Breakdown and American Girl broke through in the United States as well. Damn the Torpedoes, released in 1979, produced Refugee and Here Comes My Girl, and was followed by Southern Accents, Into the Great Wide Open, and the blues-heavy Mojo, among others. Petty wrote short, plain-spoken rock songs about stubborn people who do not get their way, and he kept it up until Hypnotic Eye gave the band its first American number 1 album in 2014. They entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002; Tom Petty died in 2017, shortly after the tour marking their fortieth anniversary.
