When this debut originally came out in November 1976, almost nothing happened with it in the United States. England picked it up instead, and only by that detour did Breakdown and American Girl eventually reach the American charts. Tom Petty, guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboard player Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair, and drummer Stan Lynch kept it short and dry: ten songs in barely half an hour, built on jangling Rickenbacker guitars and lyrics about people trying to get out of the town they came from. American Girl sits right at the end and became the song the band never got away from. This edition is an LP.
