When David Lee Roth left in 1985, Van Halen looked finished. 5150 proved otherwise: with Sammy Hagar as the new singer, the seventh studio album, originally released in March 1986, became the band's first number one on the US album chart. The title refers to Eddie Van Halen's home studio, where most of it was recorded with Mick Jones of Foreigner producing and Donn Landee engineering. Hagar's range and the heavier use of keyboards pushed the sound towards melodic hard rock, audible in Why Can't This Be Love, Dreams and Love Walks In. Best of Both Worlds and the title track keep the guitar front and centre.
