For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge originally came out in June 1991, Van Halen's ninth studio album and the third with Sammy Hagar. Andy Johns handled the recording together with Ted Templeman, back after several years away, and the result sounds drier and harder than the albums before it. Poundcake opens with a power drill held against the guitar pickups, and Right Now became known for its video full of caption cards, which won an MTV Video Music Award for best video in 1992. The album earned the band a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. Top of the World and Runaround were also released as singles.
