After leaving Carcass, guitarist Michael Amott put together his own band in Halmstad, with his brother Christopher on second guitar, Johan Liiva on vocals and Daniel Erlandsson on drums. The result was Black Earth, originally released in 1996 and Arch Enemy's debut album. The two guitarists play almost constantly in harmony, twin leads over heavy death metal riffs with Liiva's growl on top. "Bury Me an Angel", "Idolatress" and the drawn-out closer "Fields of Desolation" show how the band bent the Gothenburg formula to its own ends.
