Lady Soul originally appeared in January 1968, in the middle of the run of Atlantic albums with which Aretha Franklin reshaped soul music in under two years. It opens with Chain Of Fools and also holds (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Ain't No Way by her sister Carolyn Franklin, and covers of Curtis Mayfield and The Rascals. Eric Clapton plays guitar on Good To Me As I Am To You; the backing comes from the Muscle Shoals rhythm section with King Curtis on saxophone, and Cissy Houston and the Franklin sisters sing behind her. The album reached number 2 on the US album chart.
