After the heavy subject matter of The Nylon Curtain, Billy Joel went back to the music he grew up on. An Innocent Man is a homage to the doo-wop, soul, and R&B of the late fifties and early sixties: The Longest Time almost entirely a cappella, Uptown Girl shaped after The Four Seasons, Tell Her About It with a Motown-style beat. Those last two became the album's biggest hits, with Tell Her About It reaching number 1 in the United States and Uptown Girl spending five weeks at number 1 in the United Kingdom. Joel wrote it in the years after his divorce, when he was on his own again. It first appeared in 1983.
