The Companion series let Bright Eyes revisit their own back catalogue: every reissue came with an EP holding five new versions of album tracks plus a cover. This EP alongside The People's Key includes fresh recordings of "Jejune Stars", "Firewall" and "Approximate Sunlight", with guest turns from Johanna and Klara Söderberg of First Aid Kit and from Alynda Segarra of Hurray for the Riff Raff, plus a version of Prince's "When You Were Mine". The recordings were made at ARC Studios in Omaha and the EP came out in June 2023 on Dead Oceans.
