The River, originally released in 1980, was Bruce Springsteen's fifth studio album and his first double album. Springsteen and the E Street Band set exuberant rock and roll like "Hungry Heart" and "Cadillac Ranch" against spare, subdued narratives such as "Independence Day", "Stolen Car" and the title track. It was Springsteen's first number one on the Billboard 200, and "Hungry Heart" became his first US top ten hit single.
