Buena Vista Social Club is the self-titled album by the Cuban music collective of the same name, recorded in Havana in 1996 and released in 1997. The project was initiated by American guitarist Ry Cooder and Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos González, who brought together a group of veterans of pre-revolutionary Cuban music. Among them were singers Compay Segundo and Ibrahim Ferrer, pianist Rubén González and singer Omara Portuondo. The repertoire consists of Cuban styles such as son, bolero and danzón, with Chan Chan, Dos Gardenias and El Cuarto de Tula as its best-known songs. The album won a Grammy in 1998 and sold millions of copies worldwide. The 1999 documentary of the same name by Wim Wenders further increased its success.
