After six years without new material, Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy returned with Beyond Good and Evil, The Cult's seventh studio album, originally released in 2001. Bob Rock produced, as he had on Sonic Temple and the 1994 self-titled album, and set the guitars down heavy and compact. "Rise" became the best-known single, with "War (The Process)" and "Breathe" as other landmarks. Astbury wrote about addiction, faith and letting go of illusions. The band fell apart again shortly after the accompanying tour.
